New approach sees iicorr save Mallaig Harbour 100k

17/08/2010

Aberdeen-based integrity, inspection and corrosion specialist iicorr has successfully completed a £500,000 project for Mallaig Harbour Authority in the north west of Scotland.

iicorr was appointed to implement a corrosion protection system which would prolong the life of the harbour and minimise the effects of corrosion on the steelwork.

The solution, devised by the iicorr team, involved securing 850 standoff bar anodes onto the harbour wall using a bespoke cantilever bracket designed specifically for this project. By using the bracket, iicorr was able to save approximately eight weeks of diving time – valued at around £100,000.

Gordon McKinnell, Cathodic Protection Services Business Unit Manager at iicorr, said: “Corrosion in structures submerged in seawater is a recurring problem for ports and harbours around the world. At iicorr we have developed a low-cost solution which gives port authorities the piece of mind that their structures are protected and regularly monitored so that any necessary repairs can be budgeted for.”

The products have been designed to protect the steel piles of the harbour for approximately 25 years.

Robert MacMillan of Mallaig Harbour Authority said: “This project has been vital to securing the long-term integrity of the harbour structures. Corrosion is a very real problem for us and left unmanaged it can make the harbour extremely unsafe. Working together with harbour engineers Wallace Stone and the team at iicorr we are confident that we have a suitable corrosion management strategy in place to protect the harbour well into the future.”
