Nikon divests laser scanner division in deal with UK’s LK Metrology

Nikon Corporation (Nikon) has announced that UK-based LK Metrology Ltd has acquired Nikon’s laser scanning and Focus Inspection software business. The acquisition makes strategic sense, as the two companies have previously worked together providing non-contact inspection solutions.

The deal includes the transfer of all of Nikon’s laser scanning research and development (R&D), service and production teams to LK Metrology. This will ensure continued support for existing customers while allowing further development of laser scanning technology and software for new metrology solutions.

Nikon has been a pioneer in 3D laser scanning for over 25 years. The company’s scanners can be mounted on coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) for automated inspection or used manually with articulated measuring arms. These systems can quickly digitise parts by capturing millions of high-precision points, enabling faster inspection times and detailed analysis through Focus Inspection software.

LK Metrology, founded in 1963, is a historic name in metrology and helped develop many early coordinate measuring machine technologies. The company became independent again in 2018 after previously operating as part of Nikon for several years. LK Metrology produces coordinate measuring machines, portable measuring arms and metrology software, which are used globally for quality control in manufacturing. The company is headquartered in Derby, UK, and maintains offices across North America, Europe and China, along with a global distribution network.

Nikon and LK Metrology will collaborate to ensure a smooth transition for their customers and resellers.
