BINDT unveils the Professor Chris Scruby Library
26/02/2024
During a meeting of Council in December 2023, BINDT was pleased to unveil a new section to its extensive library of non-destructive testing, condition monitoring and related texts and conference proceedings: the Professor Chris Scruby Library.
The extension to the library was made possible through the generosity of Professor Chris Scruby, a Fellow of BINDT, former Roy Sharpe Prize and John Grimwade Medal winner and the first Director of the UK Research Centre in Non-Destructive Evaluation (RCNDE).
Reading books increases our knowledge, improves our intellect and makes us aware of different things, people, societies, civilisations and technologies. Moreover, reading books enhances our imagination and creativity. The trouble with books is they take up space and, as the information that we have absorbed from reading is retained in our minds (we hope!), the need for the books on our shelves diminishes.
Professor Scruby realised that all of the knowledge contained in his books could be transferred to others, so he donated them to BINDT, and the Institute invited him to open a new section of its library dedicated to him and his books.

It is a constitutional requirement for BINDT to have a library and it demonstrates the importance for the Institute to have a sound technical base. In the Professor Chris Scruby section alone, there are books on a huge variety of non-destructive testing methods and related technologies.
Chris joined the Institute in the 1980s as a Fellow through Graham Oates’ initiative to involve more research people. He sat on the Technical Committee for many years, was Chair of the Publications Working Group before chairing the main committee and sat on Council for several years, as well as being a Vice President for six. He was Honorary Secretary for a year and won the Roy Sharpe Prize in 1997 and 2014 and the John Grimwade Medal in 2004.
Members are welcome to visit Midsummer House, browse the library and borrow from it in the usual manner. To book your visit, contact the Secretariat by email to: info@bindt.org
