ZF introduces advanced air compressor
21/07/2025
ZF’s Commercial Vehicle Solutions (CVS) division has launched a new air compression system specifically engineered for electrified commercial vehicles. The e-comp Scroll is designed to provide efficient, oil-free and low-noise air compression for medium- and heavy-duty hybrid, battery-electric and fuel cell trucks, buses and coaches.
Compressed air remains essential in commercial vehicle applications, supporting systems such as air disc brakes, suspension and auxiliary functions. Unlike conventional internal combustion engine-powered vehicles, where compressors are mechanically driven, electric commercial vehicles rely on independently powered electric air compressors. This change introduces new requirements for noise and vibration control.
The e-comp Scroll addresses these requirements by utilising scroll technology, interlocking spirals that compress air in a smooth, continuous motion. This mechanism substantially reduces vibration and limits operational noise to approximately 67 dB(A) at a flow rate of 250 ℓ/min, a level comparable to that of a typical office environment.
Paweł Porczyński, Senior Vice President at ZF CVS, stated: “The e-comp Scroll represents a strategic advancement in support of zero-emission vehicle targets. Its oil-free design reduces environmental impact, eliminates oil-related maintenance and lowers the total cost of ownership. Energy consumption is further optimised through automatic shutdown between compression cycles.”
Equipped with a built-in electric motor, the system can generate up to 12.5 bar of pressure in a single stage and operate at variable speeds according to demand. It incorporates an integrated inverter and a liquid-cooled shell, ensuring the discharge temperature remains below 90°C (194°F). By delivering quiet, efficient and environmentally responsible air compression, the e-comp Scroll strengthens ZF’s portfolio of electrification technologies and supports the commercial vehicle sector’s transition to sustainable mobility. ZF is a global technology leader in driveline, chassis and active and passive safety systems, serving the automotive, commercial vehicle and industrial technology sectors.
