Applus to execute PAUT NDT inspection for EPC contractor in Western Canada

29/06/2022

Applus+ is set to deliver liquefied natural gas (LNG) tank inspection services for an international engineering, procurement and construction(EPC) company in British Columbia, Canada.

Conventional phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT) will be applied in conjunction with a new system that combines shear wave (SW) and dual linear array (DLA) probes to cover all required inspection for its client’s LNG containment tank. The system, Olympus’s Focus PX, is powered by the latest PAUT technology available. For the first time, Applus+ will utilise this system to execute PAUT inspection efficiently, while ensuring quality and safety throughout all stages of the project.

Incorporating new non-destructive testing inspection systems is a process that involves extensive planning. For this scope, it took the company’s team one year to prepare the technical process for the LNG tank inspection. Complete execution of the LNG tank inspection is expected to span 10-12 months.

The inspection involves incorporating the newly available Focus PX system to examine the entirety of the client’s 9% nickel LNG inner tank, including welds and its corresponding elements.

There are various key factors that enable the system to effectively deliver PAUT inspection through its multiple functions and capabilities. The system was built to address challenges that technicians face during the execution of PAUT inspections. Highlights of the system include its exceptional signal quality, its rugged and compact size (capable of working in some of the harshest environments) and its practical integration, allowing for easy and quick installation.

The system’s power lies in its distinct software, incorporating multiple applications (FocusPC, FocusControl and FocusData) to deliver powerful data acquisition and analysis capabilities to assist operators to perform quality inspections for
clients.

To ensure successful inspections, all personnel involved in this scope have been trained to operate the Focus PX system. This provides the teams with the guarantee that all assignments throughout the duration of this scope will be executed with quality and safety in mind.
