Johnson and Allen first UKAS Accredited Calibration Lab for MPI Bench Units

12/05/2009

Established in 1938, Johnson and Allen manufactures magnetic particle inspection bench units for the location of surface-breaking cracks in components for the aerospace, automotive, rail, construction and power generation industries. The technique is a cornerstone for the non-destructive testing of iron/steel-based components.

Having a customer base including Rolls-Royce, the MOD, Caterpillar, Bodycote and many leading testing inspection and insurance companies, progression to a UKAS registered status with regard to calibration was seen as a necessity to maintain current business, as well as expand on future enquiries.

Jon Johnson, Director, said the achievement was as much down to the hard work put in by staff at their Sheffield headquarters: "We didn’t get it right first time but after an initial very helpful and informative assessment from UKAS we knew what was required and the staff rallied round. Well done to all," he told NDT News.

Paul Jones, Chief Calibration Engineer, has been with the company for over 19 years, during which time he has wired, serviced and maintained equipment before being promoted to the position. He brings a wealth of experience and diligence to a very important job.

The scope of calibrations (which go up to 10 kA) can be found on the UKAS website (Lab 4186).
