GB ice hockey star joins Lavender International

21/05/2012

At the beginning of the year, Lavender International took on a new NDT apprentice, Chris Sykes. The 20-year-old finished college last summer, then decided to take on a new challenge and join the NDT world, coming into the industry with no previous NDT experience. Chris will work in support of established tutors, starting in magnetic testing and working through a programme to gain an understanding and experience in all areas of Lavender’s NDT training facility.

Chris has, however, brought the attention of Lavender’s staff to a passion of his: ice hockey. He learnt to play from the age of four and turned professional at 16. He has since then worked his way up the leagues to a high standard. He is currently playing for his local team, the Sheffield Steeldogs, and has done for the last three seasons. Within the last 12 months, Chris has also been given the opportunity to represent his country and play for Great Britain in some international games.

Many of the Lavender staff have wide and varied outside interests and the company is keen to support its staff in various ways. As ice hockey is not a well-known sport in the UK, Lavender’s Co-Managing Director Steve Lavender jumped at the chance for Lavender International to support Chris and sponsor one of his ice hockey games. On Saturday 17 March, a group of 50 Lavender staff members and their families attended the game, which was against local rivals Manchester Phoenix. They were treated to a superb evening of sport and, to cap it all off, the Steeldogs won 2-1.

Lavender International welcomes Chris to the company and wishes him well in his new challenge.
