Leadership transition in Argyll Ruane’s examinations department
06/05/2025
After more than four decades in the non-destructive testing (NDT) industry, David Griffin has stepped down from his role as Chief Examiner and Level 3 Consultant as he prepares for retirement later this year.
David joined Argyll Ruane in 1999 as the Level 3 Services Manager and was instrumental in establishing the company’s first dedicated Level 3 Services Department. In 2020, he transitioned into the examinations department to take on the role of Chief Examiner.
The Argyll Ruane examinations department manages the PCN examination process, ensuring compliance with PCN requirements, while supporting thousands of certificate holders annually. As Chief Examiner, David led the day-to-day operations of the department, assuming full responsibility for the technical and quality aspects of the examination process. This included supporting other examiners, ensuring the availability of technical support, moderating the examination process, ensuring compliance with BINDT and PCN regulations and maintaining strict control over examination documents and specimens.
His leadership has ensured a fair, consistent approach for all candidates while upholding the highest standards of quality and integrity, in both the certification process and the PCN Scheme itself.

In February 2025, Nathan Bate was promoted into the role of Chief Examiner. Having joined Argyll Ruane in February 2023 as a Level 3 Consultant, Trainer and Examiner, Nathan has spent the past year working closely with David to gain invaluable insights and experience.
David is confident in Nathan’s ability to fulfil the role, stating: “Nathan is very knowledgeable and capable. He understands the department and business very well, making the transition seamless. He will make an excellent Chief Examiner.”
Nathan, known for his meticulous and quality-driven approach, is eager to take on the new challenge, bringing a fresh perspective to the department: “I take great pride in ensuring things are done correctly. I enjoy the quality management side within the business and the certification process, which is so stringently controlled. Being a Chief Examiner at an Authorised Qualifying Body (AQB) is a highly regarded role in the industry and I am proud to take on this prestigious position,” he said.
Bryan Ravenshear, Managing Director, highlighted the value of a structured transition: “Having Nathan working alongside David for the past year has provided him with a solid foundation to fully understand the role. Now, he is able to use the knowledge passed on to him from David and combine this with his proactive and forward-thinking approach to drive the department forward. Nathan has a great eye for detail, is quality driven and a true professional. His calm, methodical approach and strong interpersonal skills make him an excellent fit for the role. Most importantly, he is passionate about certification and will try his utmost to ensure we remain compliant.”
David has played a significant role in the success of Argyll Ruane’s examination department and he will continue to support the team until his retirement in May 2025.
