Condition monitoring technology partnership launched

Greenbrier Leasing Europe is set to install Amsted Digital Solutions IQ Series gateways on all its new wagons to enable users to benefit from condition-based maintenance.

The plug-and-play gateway, built for harsh rail applications and with a long-life battery, is mounted directly on wagon bogies, a configuration that the Amsterdam-based leasing company has claimed is unique in the industry.

Deployment enables the company to receive critical information about the running gear, including wheel slide and wheel fault reports. Continuous monitoring is integrated with existing fleet management systems via industry-standard intelligent transportation system (ITSS) protocols; these can support artificial intelligence (AI)-driven predictive maintenance insights.

Wagon users will benefit from proactive wheelset health insights through an online portal, intelligent shock detection for the immediate awareness of potential damage, data-driven maintenance planning enabling targeted condition-based interventions and, as a result, significantly lowered derailment risk.

A second phase adding bearing diagnostics is to be deployed through an over-the-air upgrade capability, eliminating the need for disruptive hardware retrofits.

The leasing company is also offering its customers installation services to support broader industry adoption of digital maintenance technologies.

“This is an exciting milestone in our mission to transform freight rail through intelligent, data-driven tools,” said John Felty, Managing Director of Amsted Digital’s European operations.
