TWI expands NDT technology services overseas

08/10/2012

TWI is strengthening links with its offices in India and Malaysia as it prepares new initiatives to offer non-destructive testing (NDT) solutions and dedicated NDT services in response to growing local demand. The launch of a new research and engineering services department – NDTRES International – will give companies in India a dedicated interface with TWI engineering resources and more than 700 staff globally.

With a recognised reputation for technology transfer and
bespoke innovative NDT solutions in the UK and Europe, TWI’s NDT Technology Group is integrating dedicated NDT services with its established training services in India and Malaysia – countries experiencing a rapid increase in local demand for close-to-market R&D technology solutions.

In January 2012, TWI opened a new facility in Chennai, India, to provide a base for training as well as technical support and access to a unique, multi-disciplinary range of technology engineering and information services. In response to demand for fully certified non-destructive test operators – notably in the energy sector – NDT/inspection training services were the first of these areas to be introduced.

The international offices have rapidly become fully functional in providing training, examination and an increasing number of technology services through the employment of local skilled people and resources. Recognising that companies in India are investing increasingly in engineering quality and productivity by embracing new processes and technologies, the launch of the new NDT Research and Engineering Services Department – NDTRES International – is timely, adding significant value to existing TWI worldwide networks and TWI’s ability to deliver wider knowledge and technology transfer. Similar initiatives are planned for the benefit of Industrial Member companies in the Middle East and Far East regions.

NDT activities offered by TWI NDT Technology Group include:
  • inspection of austenitic steel components and dissimilar metal welds for the detection of manufacturing and in-service flaws;
  • monitoring and detection of corrosion using ultrasonic guided waves up to 360 m from a single location;
  • ultrasonic detection and characterisation of stress corrosion cracking in welds;
  • use of advanced ultrasonic techniques for the detection of kissing bonds in metallic and non-metallic components;
  • detection of corrosion in storage tank floors;
  • long-term structural monitoring of cracks and failures; and
  • continuous monitoring of machinery and rotating parts.
TWI has been developing research and consultancy services for non-destructive testing for more than 40 years. Growth in recent years means there are now over 90 staff (scientists, engineers and technicians) working within the NDT Group at TWI’s laboratories in the UK. The NDT Technology Group is currently involved in a suite of projects, mainly within Europe, worth in total around £30m – more than £8m of which directly funds work at TWI.

TWI is able to deploy a wide range of technologies to solve the NDT problems of member companies. To support these technologies it operates a range of state-of-the-art systems, which can be operated on site anywhere in the world.
