Doosan Babcock awarded EDF fuel flasks in readiness contract
09/09/2022
Doosan Babcock has secured a contract with EDF Energy to carry out the inspection and refurbishment of 11 non-commissioned Mk A2 irradiated fuel transport flasks. These flasks were manufactured in the 1980s and have never been placed into service due to the life extension of the UK’s nuclear fleet. Across the UK’s advanced gas-cooled reactor (AGR) nuclear fleet, the preparations for defuelling are accelerating and one key element of this preparation is the availability of flasks for the spent fuel.
Significant remediation work will take place on the flasks, with many technical disciplines required across a complex logistical programme, bringing together many of Doosan Babcock’s capabilities. The 15-month contract, to be fully delivered at the company’s Renfrew facility, will be broken into two phases, inspection and refurbishment, in which Doosan Babcock will provide a bespoke inspection, integrity assessment, fabrication and testing solution to meet EDF’s needs.
Chris Ferrie, Asset Management Business Development Director at Doosan Babcock, commented: “I am delighted to be supporting one of our key customers, EDF, with this mission-critical project.
With years of experience in delivering integrated integrity management and testing projects for EDF, I am confident that we have the skills, personnel and facilities required for a successful delivery. This project will give Doosan Babcock a great reference to showcase its portfolio of engineering and technical services in the defuelling/decommissioning space.”
Renfrew has a particular heritage in relation to the flasks, with many of them being manufactured on site back in the 1980s. The company is excited to welcome the flasks back to Renfrew.
