IMechE Level 3 Services supporting development of inspection services for Israel power grid

26/09/2023

Earlier this year, Kristian Hampson, IMechE Level 3 Consultant, delivered a bespoke phased array training course for Israel Electric Corporation (IEC).

IEC is a government-owned public utility that generates, transmits and distributes electricity in Israel. With over 13,000 employees, IEC is responsible for meeting the country’s growing energy needs and for maintaining a reliable electricity supply. The corporation operates a diverse portfolio of power plants, including natural gas, coal and renewable energy sources.

Requirements for maintaining a permanent record of inspection data are leading to a greater demand in the utilisation of phased array over manual ultrasonic testing on power plants across Israel. Recognising the need to further develop its technicians, IEC contacted the IMechE Level 3 Services team to see how the company could provide support.

Kristian Hampson, created a bespoke phased array course tailored to the requirements of IEC, in line with SNT-TC-1A 2016 and utilising American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) standards. The candidates sat exams in line with their newly produced written practice and those candidates who sat the exam achieved a 100% pass rate.

The course covered the theoretical aspects of phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT) and for the practical utilised the Sonatest Veo3 PAUT equipment. Students learned how to create set-up files for the inspection of forgings, create multi-group focal law set-ups for the inspection of single- and double-V welds and analyse the data of forgings and welds looking for multiple types of defect using the Sonatest UTstudio software.

The training provided the technicians with the ability to set up, scan and analyse forgings and welds when using the ASME V specifications. The technicians will be able to use multi-group conventional phased array techniques.
