A Materials Engineer is sought to join a company that supports global pipeline projects from the tender to the execute phase using its spoolbases, bundle yards and rigid pipelay vessels. The company combines expertise and knowledge of pipelay operations and engineering, materials, welding, coating and lay analysis.

The company’s Global Welding Development Centre (GWDC) employs a range of specialist equipment and technology (for example computerised welding) and personnel to perform the highest quality of work to meet exacting criteria.

The company continues to develop welding technology to fulfil its global project requirements within the ever-evolving energy sector, aligning its expertise to the needs of its clients both now and in the future.

The successful Materials Engineer will join a highly skilled team that collaborates closely with welding, products, engineering and projects personnel. The successful candidate will report directly to the Pipeline Materials Department Lead.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide procedures and technical knowledge to support the qualification of welding procedures, specifically regarding activities associated with pipe material, engineering critical assessment (ECA), fatigue and corrosion for the benefit of identifying risks and opportunities, improving efficiency and advancing projects and tenders to completion
  • Support non-destructive testing (NDT) personnel during NDT assessment programmes in relation to the applied acceptance criteria
  • Alongside technical knowledge, the successful candidate will have effective communication skills that will enable them to establish effective working relationships with clients and third-party vendors, along with Subsea 7’s package managers, supply chain management (SCM) leads and technical managers.

The work scope will be varied and includes the following:

Assessment of materials:

  • Provide support to ensure the required quality of project pipe material is obtained
  • Review client documents for the purpose of tendering and/or projects to highlight any risks and/or opportunities, cost implications, qualifications and/or clarifications
  • Perform assessment of pipe mill supplier quality qualifications/ clarifications
  • Undertake material and conditioning programmes, ie full-scale reeling, full-scale resonance fatigue, fracture toughness and corrosion testing for the purpose of supporting the qualification of the applicable welding procedures
  • Ensure alignment between required qualification testing programmes and ECA analytical activities, including management of schedule relative to delivery of project-specific documents
  • Deliver project-specific applicable documents within the identified schedule and cost for all projects. Any variations to the schedule and cost shall be discussed and agreed with the department manager and the project package manager
  • Liaise with applicable pipeline group engineers to identify any potential operational problems associated with identified acceptance criteria and assist in the development of a solution
  • Identify acceptance criteria for non-destructive testing procedures.

Standardisation:

  • Maintain awareness of lessons learned throughout the company to enable implementation into future working practices.

Development:

  • Maintain the material property database
  • Perform analysis of the material property database to aid the development of material quality requirements and optimum welding solutions.

Experience:

  • Degree qualified in a relevant subject (ideally materials science)
  • Chartered Engineer status is desirable but not essential
  • Experience of materials for oil & gas line pipe applications
  • Experience of performing associated material testing activities is desirable but not essential
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills at all levels of the business. The successful candidate must be a professional ambassador of the company and be able to successfully interface with clients

  • Ability to undertake occasional travel if required.

Ideally this role will be based at the company’s Old Kilpatrick office, which sits alongside its GWDC. Consideration will also be given to basing the role at the Aberdeen or Sutton offices.

This is a contract-based role offering a competitive salary.
