The successful Materials Verification Document Controller will work within a multi-discipline team, providing quality control support through product and process verification. This role involves developing processes and procedures and implementing systems that ensure products and processes fulfil quality standards, meet safety regulations and satisfy customer and contractual requirements. Working directly under the Lead Metallurgist and alongside the metallurgy team, the successful candidate will support the verification and inspection of incoming materials, as well as in-process material certification throughout manufacturing, heat treatment and welding activities within the metallurgy laboratory.
Key responsibilities:- Supporting the maintenance and governance of the ISO 9001:2015 management systems alongside customer and legislative requirements, ensuring its effectiveness through formal auditing in the relevant value stream
- Working in a multifunctional metallurgy team and alongside the quality function team supporting a proactive and collaborative project working environment, providing governance in relation to quality management while also supporting project deliveries
- Working within customer metallurgy processes, systems, equipment and facilities, including the maintenance of standards, procedures, processes and standard operating procedures (SOPs), in accordance with national standards, international standards and customer requirements
- Verifying raw material and complete component certification, including the interpretation of material certification (supplied condition, surface preparation, product and ingot chemical analysis, mechanical tests, heat treatment, non-destructive testing and surface coating) in accordance with national and international standards and customer requirements
- Performing duties, reviewing documentation and checking compliance with recognised national and international standards, including customer specifications, BSI, EN, ISO, DIN, Defence Standards, LR Rules for Naval Ships or other
- Supporting procurement with the contract, verification and delivery of external heat treatment, material testing or material verification
- Supporting the engineering function with the selection of materials, inspection and testing processes and the suitability of material conditions
- Supporting the production engineering function with the planning of heat treatment and metallurgical processes
- Managing and identifying discrepancies (non-conformance reports (NCRs)) and managing these through the non-conformance system in a timely manner
- Raising and maintaining relevant non-conformance reports using SAP for data processing, ensuring traceability and the correct characterisation of discrepancies relating to physical components or documentation
- Controlling defective items via segregation from conformant products and raising supplier defect reports (SDRs) as appropriate
- Producing and maintaining accurate inspection records
- Supporting project, supplier and customer meetings, providing updates and support on metallurgy function-related issues as required
- Preparing, reviewing, monitoring and reporting on frequent key performance indicators (KPIs) using industry standard tools and creating reports on aspects of metallurgical performance, management review elements, cost of poor quality (COPQ), process governance, ie histogram, Pareto or other.
Work experience (required skills and technical competency):
- As a minimum, experience in ISO 9001 quality management systems and experience or knowledge of other types of national and internal standard ie, ISO, AQAP, Lloyd’s Rules, Defence Standards and others
- Industry experience in some or all of the following disciplines: metallurgy, heat treatment and material testing
- Experience of working in an engineering environment
- Experience in quality control and inspection of metallic materials or manufactured products in an engineering environment
- Interpretation of material certification in line with national and international standards (BSI, EN, ISO, DIN, ASTM, Defence Standards or similar)
- Ability to read and understand various engineering instructions, control plans, drawings, specifications and procedures
- Familiarity with manufactured components ie gears, shafts, bearings, gearboxes and interrelated systems, including the manufacturing and assembly processes.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s/master’s degree in engineering or a related field
- Recognised training programme or industry experience in materials verification, metallurgy, heat treatment or equivalent
- Previous experience in a similar role within the marine and defence industry
- Strong knowledge of quality management systems and industry standards
- Detail-oriented with a strong focus on team, quality and continuous improvement.
