The paper provides a brief overview of the vibration characteristics of toothing mounting and operating defects. The vibration spectra of multipliers and reducers used in industrial units are saturated with a large number of discrete components. These are the excitation frequencies (and their harmonics) due to the kinematic parameters of the gearbox and its shaft rotation speeds, and their combinations with each other and with the natural frequencies of the machine parts (in the presence of defects). Identification of spectral components is often a difficult task. Examples of vibration diagnostic investigations of industrial compressor multipliers of chemical plants and other gearboxes illustrate methods for extracting diagnostic information and possible pitfalls that mask the correct diagnosis.
