Speaker	Biography
Dr David Alleyne Operations Director Guided Ultrasonics Limited (GUL)	As Operations Director at Guided Ultrasonics Limited (GUL), Dr David Alleyne’s activities include marketing through technical support services, technology development and strategic research. Dr Alleyne gained a PhD in guided wave testing (GWT) of plates from Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, London, UK, in 1991. He is a member of the original research team for GWT systems for pipes and plates. Approaching 30 years’ experience in the GWT field, Dr Alleyne is a major contributor to the worldwide development of GWT standards, training and qualification. His achievements include outstanding academic contributions supported by field, testing and monitoring application specific knowledge and expertise.
Tim Armitt, IEng, FInst, NDT LEP Technical Director, Level 3 Instructor and Consultant Lavender International	Tim Armitt joined Lavender International in 1992 after gaining NDT experience working on a wide product base, including nuclear, petrochemical, power generation and aerospace components. Since joining Lavender International, Tim has attained ASNT Level 3 qualifications in UT, MT, PT, ET and VT and is also a PCN Level 3 in ten categories, including TOFD and phased array, for each of which he acts as a PCN examiner. He has also gained Fellowship of the British Institute of NDT.  Tim has become known worldwide as a leading expert in TOFD and PA applications and has focused on training and examinations, performance demonstration trials, capability studies and bespoke applications. Tim was responsible for setting up Lavender International NDT USA, LLC, based in Houston, which he officiates as General Manager. The Houston office offers training courses in conventional UT, TOFD, PA and offline data.
B J (Bill) Brown Technical Manager TRAC Oil & Gas Ltd	Bill Brown started his working life in August 1969 as a trainee NDT Technician, effectively an apprentice, at Babcock and Wilcox in Renfrew, Scotland, and eventually gained CSWIP approvals in ultrasonics.  In 1974, Bill started his management career with the British Steel Corporation when he was appointed NDT Manager of the plate mill at Clydebridge, Glasgow. Bill left the plate mill in 1978 and spent the next three years selling NDT/optical equipment to industry in Scotland and the North East of England. Bill moved to Aberdeen in 1981 with the specific purpose of introducing and developing the application of eddy currents to coated steel structures. He held senior management positions within offshore NDT contracting businesses between 1981 and 2004. 2004 saw a major career change for Bill when he became involved in the training and examination sector of the NDT industry, leading to the position of Training Facilities Manager for TWI in Aberdeen. Since 2014, Bill has been Technical Manager at TRAC Oil & Gas Ltd. Having been involved with the British Institute of Non-Destructive testing for at least 20 years, Bill started as a Graduate Member and is now a Member. He is also actively involved with the following committees: Council, Certification Management Committee (CMC) and General Technical Committee (GTC). Bill was awarded the Nemet Award by BINDT in 2011, for outstanding contribution to the practice of NDT by an individual. Bill is also Branch Secretary for both the Scottish and North East Scotland Branches of the Institute.
Gary Elliott Director and Head of Outside Agency Level 3 Services Lavender International	Gary Elliott is a Director at Lavender International, where he has worked for the last 25 years. Gary started his working life as a Technical Apprentice at Firth Brown Ltd, Sheffield, in the steel industry and worked as an NDT Level 2 for around 20 years. Gary is a Chartered Engineer, holding both ASNT and PCN Level 3 certification in six NDT methods and a degree in metallurgy, which he gained through day release at Sheffield Polytechnic. Having worked with the Institute for many years, Gary sits on the following committees: Engineering Council Working Group, Membership, Qualification & Education Committee (MQ&E), Certification Management Committee (CMC) and Council. Gary also contributes to the Training Establishment Group and Outside Agency/Inside Agency Group. In addition, Gary is currently involved in the Practitioner Working Group, the aims of which include engaging with the thousands of practitioners who currently have no involvement with BINDT.
David Gilbert, CEng, MInstNDT, MIET Deputy CEO BINDT	David Gilbert has been a professional technical editor for more than 25 years. David graduated from the University of Leeds with a degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and, after a spell in industry, he went on to become Editor of Vector, Southern Africa’s largest electrical engineering journal. David joined BINDT in 1993 as Editor of the Institute's journal, which was re-launched with the new title Insight in 1994. David is now Director, Head of Publishing and Media, Membership and Registration and Deputy CEO at BINDT. David is also a Chartered Engineer, Member of the British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing and Member of the Institute of Engineering & Technology.
Joe Heigold Senior Process Technologist NDT Tata Steel Vice President BINDT	Joe Heigold has spent the last 40 years working in the South Yorkshire steel industry. Initially pushing UT probes over bars, billets and forgings for many hours a day, he has been supported by a rapidly expanding pool of people executing surface and volumetric methods whose training, qualification, mentoring, certification and ongoing support he assumed responsibility for, right up to the present, and maintained his practitioner status. Joe knows more than most how practice is rarely as straightforward as textbook theoretical predictions imply and how infrequently ideal test conditions prevail. He has shared incredible highs, immense satisfaction and strong support, most often from fellow practitioners who understand the difficulties.
Alan Hunscott Technical Support Manager (ultrasonic) GE Measurement & Control Inspection Technologies	Alan Hunscott started his career in NDT in the mid-1970s, joining Wells Krautkramer in 1980, and has been involved in ultrasonic technological development over a period that has seen the introduction of digital flaw detectors and ultrasonic phased array technology. A member of BINDT since 1974, Alan has served on the BINDT Technical Committee since 1987 and currently sits on Council, the Trade & Industry Committee and Marketing Committee.
Jonathan Joynson Level 3 NDT Engineer, Trainer and Examiner The South West School of NDT Ltd (MTD Group)	Jonathan Joynson initially joined the RAF as an Avionics Technician and after 15 years in this trade retrained as an NDT technician. On completion of training, he served with the regional NDT team based at RAF Waddington carrying out NDT on a diverse selection of aircraft and helicopters, ranging from frontline and training aircraft to Battle of Britain Memorial Flight aircraft and ATC gliders. After four years, he was posted to St Athan where he spent five years on technical development and then six years as an instructor with the Tri-Service School of NDT. During this period in St Athan he was trained in laser shearography, principally for the inspection of the sentry aircraft radomes but also due to the increasing use of composites within the MOD. Recently, on leaving the RAF, he joined The South West School of NDT, MTD Group, as a Level 3 NDT Engineer, Trainer and Examiner.
Dr Martin Lugg TSC Inspection Systems	Dr. Martin Lugg joined TSC Inspection Systems in 1988 as NDE Development Manager, becoming Technical Director in 1994. Martin was responsible for all NDE developments at TSC, mainly involving industrial applications of the ACFM technique. Among the projects undertaken were inspection systems for threaded connections and underwater tubular welded intersections, array probes for rapid surface scanning and a lift-off sensor for measuring marine fouling thickness. As an ACFM Level III, Martin has been involved in setting up ACFM training courses under the SNT-TC-1A and PCN schemes and acting as an external ACFM Level III consultant. Member of BINDT, ASNT, ASTM, and IOP CSWIP Level III ACFM, PCN Level III ACFM Member of Electromagnetics Committee of ASNT. Author of Chapter 10 ‘Alternating Current Field Measurement’ in Nondestructive Testing Handbook, Vol. 5. Member of ASTM Committee E07.07 (Electromagnetic NDE).
Roger Lyon BINDT	Roger Lyon spent 12 years in the Royal Navy between 1960 and 1972 before embarking on an NDT career. After completing the Kodak Lloyd's-approved industrial radiography course he spent three years working as a radiographer at GKN Kent Alloys, followed by one year with Palatine Radiographic Services and then three years as a radiologist with ASME Vessels. Roger joined the Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB) in 1979, which eventually became RWE, and during this period became a manager rather than a practitioner. Upon retiring from RWE in 2009, he had achieved a personal grade of Principle Engineer and was Section Head of 60 NDT engineers, managing the RWE NDT programme globally. Although retired, Roger has been continually involved with BINDT as a Director, Member, Honorary and Founder Fellow, Project Leader of the BINDT Apprenticeship Schemes Development Group as well as Vice President of the European Federation for NDT.
John Moody Technical Support Engineer BINDT	John Moody first became involved in NDT whilst working as a Trainee Metallurgical Technician at British Steel. After a short period of instructing in NDT the opportunity arose to join a recently-formed training company, then called Ruane and T P O’Neill, as Examination Invigilator for the PCN/CSWIP scheme. This progressed to the role of Examiner and finally Chief Examiner, with the company having new ownership under IMechE. John then joined BINDT as Technical Support Engineer, a new position that has expanded in its scope considerably. One of the significant projects is the in-service oil & gas training and certification package. John currently holds multiple PCN certification at Levels 2 and 3, has a BSc first class honours degree in NDT and is an Incorporated Engineer.
Phil Morris Consultant C Philip Morris Ltd	Phil Morris has been actively employed in the field of NDT since 1970 and in that time has gained experience in a variety of industry sectors, including aerospace, petrochemical, nuclear, foundries and fabrications. Phil holds extensive technical qualifications and has also gained experience in sales and marketing, both as a supplier of products and as an NDT service provider. Phil has been an active member of the BINDT Trade & Industry Committee and Council, as well as serving four years as Vice President.
Phil Picton Professor of Engineering University of Northampton	Professor Phil Picton completed his degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Swansea University in 1979, before obtaining a PhD in Digital Logic Design from the University of Bath in 1982. Phil became a Research Fellow at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh and worked on robotics and image processing. He was also appointed as a lecturer in electronics at the Open University in 1984, where he contributed to the writing of courses in control engineering, electronics, mechatronics and artificial intelligence. In 1994, Phil moved to the University of Northampton and became Professor of Intelligent Computer Systems. In 2005, he became Head of Engineering and began working closely with the British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing to produce a unique set of distance learning courses in NDT. His own contribution was to write the modules on ultrasonic testing, radiographic testing and vibration analysis. Over the course of his academic career he has published over a hundred papers and written two books.
Phil Raw Argyll-Ruane	Philip Raw has 26 years’ experience in NDT, holding a BSc (Hons) and Level 3 certification from PCN, Rolls-Royce, Augusta Westland, Airbus and BAE Systems, as well as ASNT Level III certification.  Philip’s specialisms include NDT in aerospace, forgings, thermography, weld and visual inspection and immersion ultrasonic testing. He also has experience in, and holds Level 3 qualifications for, materials evaluation disciplines, including hardness testing, conductivity testing, acid etch inspection and anodic inspection. Philip is an expert in the following NDT methods: magnetic particle testing, penetrant testing, visual testing and ultrasonic testing.
Nicole Scutt Director of Certification BINDT	Nicole Scutt joined BINDT in November 2000, working in the Certification Services Division with John Thompson. In November 2012, she took her current post as Director of Certification. Nicole has a BA Honours degree and is a member of BINDT. Nicole has overall responsibility for all matters regarding certification, including compliance by BINDT with relative normative criteria and compliance with BINDT normative criteria by sub-contractors and clients seeking management systems certification and/or BINDT accreditation. Nicole is actively involved with numerous committees, including the Certification Management Committee, Council, General Technical Committee, UK NANDTB, ANDTBF and all working groups. She also has special responsibility for management of the Certification Services Division, which currently includes 19 members of staff.
Chris Simmonds Managing Director Ultramag Inspection Services Ltd	This year, Chris Simmonds is celebrating 25 years both with Ultramag Inspection Services and in the NDT industry. He started his career in January 1990 as a Trainee Welding Inspector working alongside his father. Over the years, he has obtained Levels 2 and 3 NDT qualifications, a degree and most recently an IIW diploma at International Welding Technologist (IWT) level. Chris is now Managing Director of Ultramag Inspection Services, which employs 17 inspectors.
Michael Smith, PhD, CEng, MInstNDT Technology & Innovation Director TSC Inspection Systems	Michael Smith is Director of Technology and Innovation with TSC Inspection Systems, where he is responsible for the development of new technologies and products. He has spent over 20 years developing and promoting ACFM within a wide range of industries. Mike gained a PhD in Non-Destructive Testing from Cranfield University, is a Chartered Engineer through BINDT and holds Level 3 CSWIP ACFM certification.
