Full volumetric inspection of small bore pipe to fitting welds using Limbo TOFD
Abstract
This presentation addresses the issues confronting full volumetric inspection of pipe to flange and pipe to elbow joints. The presentation first addresses code compliance and then details modelling to demonstrate blind zones resulting from single sided PAUT inspection. Subsequent explanation on how the solution was developed and validated by use of performance demonstration welds with imbedded seeded defects. Comparisons are made between effectiveness of RT, PAUT and Limbo TOFD in pipe nominal diameters 50mm (2 inch) and above. Conclusions show that the novel inspection solution is both effective and simple to apply. This concept not only enhances detection of defects in new welds but also opens an effective solution to in-service defects including cracking, corrosion and weld root erosion.
