This paper will give an update on the state-of-the-art development of an oil condition monitor (OCM) that uses technology licensed by Eaton from the University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI). Designed for aerospace applications, the system includes an airworthy sensor and uses proprietary oil antioxidant depletion algorithms for continuous information regarding the remaining useful life evaluation routine (RULER) applied to advanced synthetic oils. The need for online RULER is driven by environmental concerns leading to the lubricant having a longer life within the machine, during which the additive package that gives the simple base oil its lubricity and corrosion resistance degrades, and it is vital that an alert to the loss of additive capability is advised in a timely manner, prior to machine damage.
