Given their sustainability, efficiency and high performance, conveyor belt systems present one of the most popular types of conveyors used in industries. Mistracking is the tendency of the belt to pull to one side and to run off its intended track. In an industrial application, belt mistracking is a constant and significant problem when running a conveyor system. This paper proposes an original diagnostic approach for belt mistracking detection in conveyor belt systems based on motor current signature analysis (MCSA). Three HOS features are tested in this study as diagnostic features for conveyor belt mistracking. The effectiveness of the considered features is evaluated and compared, respectively, using current signals recorded for different tracking conditions of a conveyor belt system existing at the University of Huddersfield.
