Cast iron pipes are widely used in various industries due to their high strength and durability. However, over time, these pipes can develop cracks and experience a decrease in fracture toughness, leading to potential leaks. Understanding the interdependency between leak rate, degradation of fracture toughness and crack growth is crucial for assessing the integrity of cast iron pipes and implementing effective maintenance strategies. This paper investigates the relationship between these factors through a comprehensive analysis of existing literature and experimental data. The findings provide valuable insights into the mechanisms behind crack propagation and offer guidance for mitigating the risks associated with cast iron pipe failures.
