This paper is intended to empirically analyse the strategic role of computerised maintenance management systems (CMMSs) in small and medium enterprises (SMEs), highlighting the benefits that reside in the adoption of the system, including keeping the company’s maintenance budget low, improving the versatilities of the staff and increasing the availability of assets, and the hidden potential of CMMSs in SMEs. The paper also provides clear functional/operational guidelines for the implementation of the tool and presents the barriers that may hinder the successful implementation of a CMMS. Finally, its use as a decision-making tool to assist management in keeping up with the day-to-day running of their industry safely and healthily is discussed.
