Oil debris monitoring is one of the earliest condition monitoring techniques and remains the mainstay of aerospace health monitoring and prognostics today. This paper will briefly introduce a journey from the beginnings of simple manual magnetic probe inspection through to advanced on-line trending monitors.

The body of the paper and conclusion objectives are to determine the appropriate level of technology/cost in relation to the criticality of the asset. Since engineers have a fundamental tendency to use the best solution on the market, whereas our accounting brothers and sisters will usually have a different perspective, a methodology is required to satisfy both drivers.

Using a risk assessment and understanding the asset will lead to the optimal solution and an acceptable budget. Two diverse case studies will demonstrate these principles put into practice.
