The final report from a workshop to establish the requirements for non-destructive testing (NDT), condition monitoring (CM) and structural health monitoring (SHM) in the civil engineering industry was published by the British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing (BINDT) in March 2025.

The Workshop was held at the Institution of Civil Engineers in London and was organised by the Research Centre in NDE (RCNDE), BINDT, the Infrastructure Industry Innovation Partnership (i3P) and the Construction Industry Research and Information Association (CIRIA). Its objectives were to: help the NDT/CM/SHM community understand the inspection problems faced by the civil engineering sector; establish the requirements for improved NDT/CM/SHM solutions for large civil structures manufactured from metal, concrete and masonry; consider the application of emerging inspection tools and technologies; and document the specific requirements for action, research or application that will bring about an early benefit in the sector.

The presentation will outline the main discussions from the workshop and provide an update on progress with the main actions that were identified to facilitate closer ties between the NDT/CM/SHM and civil engineering communities.
