NDT Engineer apprentice signs up at NDT 2018
We actually had an NDT Engineer apprentice sign up for his apprenticeship at NDT 2018.  For BINDT, this is the icing on the cake. Jack Bryant was accompanied by his manager, Steve Meikle from
EDF  Energy, when he visited the Skills Training UK stand and signed up for the NDT Engineer apprenticeship. For more information on this, please read the article from Skills Training UK, which is also in this issue of NDT News.

The NDT apprenticeship success story
When we first applied to develop an NDT apprenticeship, we had to submit an expression of interest. However, as the Employer Group wanted to develop three apprenticeships instead of the one, we actually had to submit three expressions of interest. In the expression of interest, it specifically asks you to estimate the numbers that will apply for each apprenticeship. That is when it became very difficult.  Other than carrying out a full-blown market research survey, it really had to be guess work. The estimates for the NDT Engineering Technician and the NDT Operator apprenticeships combined were 200 per year. As of the end of this month, I estimate that the numbers will rise to around 110, with ninety of these coming through Skills Training UK. Other Lead Providers are Barnsley College, Loughborough College and Rolls-Royce. Together, we are on track to meet our targets. With the NDT Engineer, we are doing even better. After one month we have approximately 20 signed up (or ready to sign up), with commitments from many others. This is against an estimate of 33 for the first year and 50 to 100 in subsequent years.

Apprenticeship End-point Assessments are imminent and BINDT is ready to go
The very first End-point Assessments for an NDT apprenticeship will be carried out on Monday 24 September 2018, so by the time you read this article it will have happened. Rolls-Royce, who is our Lead Employer, has always been very proactive and has led by example. Rolls-Royce was the first to register apprenticeships and therefore the first to go through the End-point Assessment process. We have a little breathing space and time to reflect before our next End-point Assessments, which will take place early in 2019. You may be interested in some statistics, which can be found in the table included at the end of this article.

As the NDT Operator apprenticeship is only an 18-month programme, the statistics for 2020 and 2021 may well increase.

Future developments
I have mentioned before about the further development with the University of Northampton in establishing an MSc Advanced Industrial Practice in Non-Destructive Testing, Condition Monitoring and Structural Health Monitoring. This has now gathered momentum and I have completed the 24-page scoping document. I will present this to the Internal Faculty Meeting for the validation of the MSc Advanced Industrial Practice, chaired by the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Science and Technology, on Thursday 27 September 2018. This will be followed by a full validation event at the University of Northampton, which will take place on 30 October 2018.  Watch this space.
