Level 2 NDT Operator working group

The Level 2 Non-Destructive Testing Operator apprenticeship standard is currently under review by Skills England.

As a sector, this presents an important opportunity to ensure the standard remains aligned with real-world industry requirements and continues to provide meaningful value to both apprentices and employers.

The Level 2 NDT Operator standard represents a critical entry point into the non-destructive testing (NDT) profession. It must remain clearly defined, accessible and achievable, particularly for small and specialist employers who may operate within a limited number of NDT methods.

Progression to the Level 3 Non-Destructive Technologies Technician standard requires apprentices to achieve two non-volumetric methods and one advanced volumetric method, alongside demonstrating supervisory responsibility. For employers working predominantly within a single method, this progression pathway can be challenging without a strong and practical Level 2 foundation.

The Level 2 standard therefore plays a vital role as a stepping stone, enabling apprentices to build confidence, competence and core industry understanding before progressing to more advanced technical and supervisory responsibilities.

To support the review process, an industry working group is being established to gather employer feedback and examine the standard in detail.

The group will focus on:
  • Employer needs and workforce realities
  • Accessibility and deliverability
  • Future skills requirements
  • Sustainability of the apprenticeship pathway.

This initiative is being supported through industry collaboration to ensure the NDT Operator standard remains fit for purpose and reflective of genuine sector demand.

Any employers or stakeholders interested in becoming involved in the Level 2 NDT Operator working group are encouraged to register their interest by contacting Julie Goodfellow (email: julie.goodfellow@lavender-ndt.com).

Engagement from across the NDT community will be vital in shaping a sustainable and accessible pathway for the next generation entering our profession.
