STEM Outreach Programme launch

The British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing (BINDT) has officially launched its STEM Outreach Programme, a nationwide initiative aimed at engaging young minds in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), with a particular focus on non-destructive testing (NDT).

The programme is designed to promote careers in NDT, condition monitoring (CM) and structural health monitoring (SHM) to school and college students. The initiative will focus on increasing awareness of STEM careers, addressing gender imbalance and diversity issues and demonstrating the real-world applications of NDT.

Early exposure to STEM and NDT plays a crucial role in shaping future career choices. Many students have never heard of NDT, despite its critical role in industries worldwide. By actively engaging with young people, BINDT aims to bridge this knowledge gap and showcase the rewarding career opportunities available in the field.

Since its launch, the initiative has been rolled out through school visits, careers fairs and major STEM events across the UK. Volunteers have delivered interactive NDT demonstrations and shared their career journeys to inspire the next generation.

Key outreach efforts so far include BINDT’s presence at National Apprenticeship and Education Events in Newcastle and Cardiff, with a further event planned to take place in Salford in March, and the National School & College Leaver Festival in Birmingham.

The programme is also supported through the STEM Ambassador platform, which connects industry professionals with schools and outreach opportunities. Volunteers can sign up, track their activities and access BINDT-coordinated events to further their involvement.

BINDT’s STEM programme is a significant step in building a pipeline of future NDT professionals. The Institute will continue expanding its outreach efforts, with more events and school engagements planned throughout the year.

Through mentorship, school visits and real-world demonstrations, BINDT is ensuring that NDT is firmly on the radar of future engineers and technicians. The work has only just begun!
