"The only test without an acceptance criterion!"

Good day everyone and welcome to what is officially the Institute’s biggest, best and only quiz!

Following the high standards set by Moody’s Memoranda and Boulton’s Bulletin felt like a lot of pressure, so rather than pretending I had a grand master plan, I decided to take a simpler and slightly more casual approach.


For those who don’t know me, I’m Howard Garlick, one of the Institute’s Technical & Certification Engineers, with over ten years’ experience in PCN training. Before anyone raises concerns about how I spend my time at the Institute, I’d like to reassure you that remarkably little time and effort went into creating this half hour of enjoyment.

The quiz will initially appear in the quarterly issues of NDT News. If people enjoy it, and if I can find the time between actual work, it may even become a monthly feature.

To keep things reasonably fair and educational, the questions will be split across the six core NDT methods: ET, MT, PT, RT, UT and VT, with a few additional questions on the UK’s finest Institute and its much-loved certification documents. That said, there will be no complex psychometric analysis or ISO 9712 level validation processes involved here. This is a quiz, not a certification exam!

The aim is simply to test your knowledge, introduce you to methods you may not work with every day and hopefully teach us all something along the way.

Sadly, there are no prizes, CPD points, discounts or career-changing rewards attached to your score – only bragging rights over your colleagues. On the bright side, there are also no penalties for poor performance and your existing certifications will remain safely intact regardless of how badly things go.

Participants are also politely reminded that the use of Google, ChatGPT or that suspiciously knowledgeable colleague sitting opposite you is strictly prohibited… at least in spirit.
