26th ASNT Research Symposium

The 26th ASNT Research Symposium, formerly known as the ASNT Spring Conference, was held in Jacksonville, Florida, from 13-16 March 2017. The location for the conference, the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront Hotel, is on the St Johns River. The city is named in honour of Andrew Jackson, Military Governor of the Florida Territory and eventual President of the United States.

The last time I was in Jacksonville was in 1963, when I was using an audio gauge to obtain thickness measurements on a T2 class oil tanker in the Jacksonville Shipyard. Fast-forward to present-day Jacksonville, which has a modern airport connected to the main city by an efficient multi-lane highway system.

The keynote address was given by Gerhard Williams III and was titled: ‘Predictive analysis in NDE of railroads’. Gerhard is from CSX Transportation, which is based in Jacksonville and is one of the USA’s leading transportation services.

The 2017 Research Award for Sustained Excellence was awarded to John Newman from Laser Technology, who presented a lecture titled: ‘The development and application of shearography NDT’.

The 2017 Research Award for Innovation was awarded to Dr Edward Gererazio from NASA Langley Research Center, who presented a lecture titled: ‘Electric potential and electric field imaging with dynamic applications’.

Presentation topics at the event included: NDE of Railroads, NDE of Aerospace, Materials Characteristics, NDT of Composites, Structural Health Monitoring, NDE in Additive Manufacturing, Radiography, NDE of Pipelines and Pressure Vessels, Acoustic Emission, Infrastructure, Ultrasonics, NDE of Adhesive Bonds, Civil Infrastructure, NDE of Joints, Electromagnetic Methods and Advancing NDE Methods.

There were a total of 32 exhibitors including BINDT, although Baugh & Weedon’s neighbouring stand remained unmanned due to visa issues. The ASNT Fall Conference will be held in Nashville, Tennessee, from 30 October to 2 November 2017 at Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center. I look forward to seeing many UK-based country music lovers in Nashville!
