The lockdown of 2020

While writing this memorandum, the UK is still in lockdown and there is no date set for restrictions to be lifted. I would like to think that we will all have tales to tell in the future about the lockdown of 2020 and I hope that none of you have lost family, friends or colleagues.

One of the interesting points that has arisen from this international crisis is how individuals and organisations are responding; some are viewing how work can continue during this period, with some being seen to be less than helpful when asked for advice on what is allowed, while others are spending time and effort looking at how rules and standards can be interpreted to cope with the current situation.

I expect that each of you will be affected to a greater or lesser extent. Some people continue to go to work as they have been advised that their job ensures that the country has, for example, a water supply; they are there for the duration and will not be going back to the family unit or mixing in society as they are key workers. Others have been furloughed, a word that was probably little known and infrequently used until now.

One of the great advantages of the Internet is that you can look for information on most things if you have the time and inclination. You can gain more knowledge on non-destructive testing and condition monitoring and look at equipment manufacturers’ websites to see what the latest equipment and consumables are capable of doing and how standard-compliant they are. You can explore manufacturing processes and degradation processes that affect plant and assets. The University of Northampton has a distance-learning degree programme in place that may appeal and you may also wish to consider Engineering Council registration; there are many opportunities available.

How many meetings will continue as web-based meetings rather than physical meetings? If they do, how much travel time and expense will be saved and will that lead to an increase in productivity?

Wishing you and your family good health.
