This book is a concise yet thorough guide to the practical application of the Penetrant Method of Non-Destructive Testing. Despite the very strong practical emphasis, adequate theoretical background is given to explain why particular procedures are adopted and to provide an understanding of the potential and limitations of the techniques. It will be of great value to all operators, inspectors, supervisors and engineers who are involved directly or indirectly in the application of NDT, as well as being a suitable course book for all those studying for the relevant certification schemes (problems with solutions are included). Following an introductory chapter which outlines the reasons for the introduction of NDT and places it in the context of the historical development of technology, Chapter 2 deals with the origin of defects and discusses the mechanisms of material failure, stress raisers and the stages when defects can arise. Chapters 3, 4, 5 and 6 cover the development of penetrant testing, the underlying principles, techniques of application (including special techniques), and an indication of how to choose the most relevant process. Chapter 7 gives an indication of the equipment needed to carry out the processes from the individual stations. Chapter 8 deals with quality control, both in manufacture and during use, of materials and equipment. The subject of specification and documentation is explored in Chapter 9 while the important topics of health and safety and the management of effluent and waste products are discussed in the final two chapters.
