Condition monitoring and diagnostic technology

Periodicals

 Insight
Insight is the Institute's internationally-recognised journal and Europe's foremost NDT publication. It covers NDT in its widest sense: condition monitoring, diagnostic technology and engineering, metrology, and all other materials testing disciplines and techniques.
Insight contains articles of interest to everyone – students to company directors, professors to practitioners. The journal presents the latest research, new and novel applications, back-to-basics refreshers and general interest articles, national and international news and events diary, while letters to the editor add topicality and a good measure of controversy. Published monthly, Insight provides a real insight into the world of materials testing and measuring for quality.

Condition Monitor
Condition Monitor is a monthly online newsletter owned by the British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing designed to keep individuals and companies up-to-speed with developments and news within the industry. As of 2019, Condition Monitor will be available to individual members online free of charge and is available to non-members through subscription.

BINDT Yearbook
This is regarded as the industry bible; it is used extensively not only by those working in CM/NDT, but by users and potential users of CM/NDT equipment and services. This regular reference work contains sections on materials testing methods and capabilities, a guide to the market place, buyers' guides, CM/NDT certification, the Institute, and detailed information on standards, books, periodicals, conferences, exhibitions, foreign societies, and many other items all in one handy book.
Available for purchase by non-members, this essential reference is free to all members.

International Journal of Condition Monitoring
In 2011, the British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing launched an online journal for the international condition monitoring community – The International Journal of Condition Monitoring (IJCM). The journal ceased publication in 2020.
IJCM is a scientific-technical journal containing high-quality innovative in-depth peer-reviewed papers on all the condition monitoring disciplines, including: acoustic emission methods, electric motor insulation and signature analysis, flow rate monitoring, infrared thermography, lubrication management, optical monitoring, pressure monitoring, temperature monitoring, vibration analysis and also on damage and failure analysis, modelling for condition monitoring, prognostics, sensors and actuators.
BINDT published 21 issues, the contents of which are available online via IngentaConnect (http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/bindt/ijcm).

Books

An Introduction to Condition Monitoring and Diagnostic Technologies
Editors: Professor A Hope and Mr D Whittle

Covering all aspects of condition monitoring from an introductory level, this new title provides a general introduction to CM and diagnostic technologies, containing eleven chapters on the following topics: implementing condition-based maintenance; vibration analysis; oil analysis; wear debris analysis; acoustic emission; thermal imaging; ultrasound condition monitoring; motor current signature analysis / electrical condition monitoring; optical condition monitoring and laser shearography; prognostics and root cause failure analysis; ISO standards.

The opening chapter covers the challenges involved in setting up a CM programme and this is followed by several chapters that provide an introduction to the most widely used CM techniques and diagnostic technologies. A further chapter introduces the wide range of international CM standards and, although the book is essentially an introductory text, an additional chapter is included on the important topic of prognostics. The individual chapters are written by experts who are well-known in their particular fields of expertise. The book will provide a useful introduction to the subject for both undergraduate and postgraduate engineering students, researchers, academics, condition monitoring practitioners and management.

Infrared Thermography Handbook – Volume 1. Principles and Practice
Author: N Walker

This book will provide guidance on the subject of infrared thermography (IRT), namely heat transfer theory, equipment selection, applications and operational factors; and as such can be used as an information source to support IRT operations.

Infrared Thermography Handbook – Volume 2. Applications – (INST32X)
Author: A N Nowicki

This book is aimed at thermographers who have attained at least Level 1 accreditation in IRT. It is recommended that the reader also has some operational experience in order to have the required level of knowledge to understand the terminology and diagnostic descriptions included.

Vibration Analysis Pocket Guide

This Vibration Analysis Pocket Guide is designed to assist vibration analysis users to diagnose common machinery fault patterns. Each fault covered presents real-world spectral and waveform data, which are labelled with analysis tips and the preferred amplitude unit(s) in which to analyse the respective faults. The faults covered are categorised into synchronous, non-synchronous and sub-synchronous energy (based upon known shaft speed) as follows:
synchronous frequencies – (imbalance, misalignment, belt misalignment, structural looseness, mechanical looseness, sleeve bearing wear, blade/vane pass, worn gears, chipped/broken gear teeth, misaligned gears).
Non-synchronous frequencies – (harmonics of primary belt frequency, rolling element bearing defects, cavitation, electrical).
Sub-synchronous frequencies – (primary belt frequency, primary bearing cage frequency, oil whirl).
Printed on high-quality paper with a durable matt finish. A useful technical glossary is included. Produced by Reliability Maintenance Solutions Ltd and published by the British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing on behalf of its Condition Monitoring Group (COMADIT).

Vibration Monitoring and Analysis Handbook
Author: Simon R W Mills

This new book is compiled by Simon Mills, a chartered marine engineer with over 30 years’ experience in practical engineering, and has been developed from his BINDT PCN accredited series of training modules for vibration analyst training and qualification in accordance with ISO 18436-2. It approaches the subject in an informal and informative manner, with a selection of clear diagrams, pictures and tabulated methodologies. It addresses all levels of the syllabus given in ISO 18436-2 for vibration condition monitoring and diagnostics and the BINDT specification – General requirements for qualification and assessment of condition monitoring and diagnostic personnel (BINDT CM Gen Appendix D for vibration analysis), giving practical advice, examples and case histories. BINDT has sponsored the publication of this handbook as part of its portfolio of CM handbooks, to fill in and reference required areas of knowledge. In conjunction with required ISO, BS and other textbook references, it provides a basis for effective training and accountable qualification and certification as required by ISO 18436.
