Cygnus supporting Calshot Trust with Cygnus 4+

24/08/2020

During April 2020, Cygnus Instruments Ltd was approached by a potential customer who asked about the prices for a suitable gauge for measuring the thickness of steel. Following a couple of days of discussion, Cygnus discovered that they were part of the Calshot Trust, a registered charity for the restoration of the tug tender Calshot.

Cygnus made the decision to donate a multi-mode Cygnus 4+ ultrasonic thickness gauge, which it claims is ideal for measuring through coatings and heavily corroded steel, with suitable probes to help this good cause restore the ship to seaworthiness.

The Calshot was built in 1929 by John I Thornycroft & Co on the Isle of Wight. She was used to tender various liners that visited Southampton. During World War II she was used at Scapa to tender servicemen to and from the RMS Queen Elizabeth and the RMS Queen Mary. After many years of service in Ireland, she returned to Southampton. Famous people who have sailed on the Calshot include Sir Winston Churchill, Dame Elizabeth Taylor, Bob Hope, Ginger Rogers, Judy Garland and Cary Grant, to name just a few.

Cygnus will be following the progress of this project with great interest and will try to provide regular updates on the Cygnus website.
