The British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing (BINDT) hosted its biennial Aerospace Workshop, Aerospace Event and exhibition from 10-12 April 2018 at the BAWA Centre, Filton, Bristol, UK.
On 10 April 2018, the BINDT Aerospace Committee held its one-day workshop titled ‘Additive Manufacturing (AM) for Aerospace’ and attracted over 40 attendees. The aim of the workshop was to inform delegates of some of the ongoing non-destructive testing (NDT) activities in the aerospace field, from in-situ process monitoring through to as-built component inspection, and provide an insight into the direction of future research.

Dr David Hallam, Chair of the BINDT Aerospace Committee, said: “The workshop brought together an audience of participants and attendees from across the academic and industrial AM community to hear a variety of interesting talks, from in-process to as-built AM inspection. I thought the presentations were of a high quality and I was particularly pleased with the participation and feedback I received on the panel session, which provided a stimulating discussion on some of the research challenges and opportunities in this area. The workshop concluded with an excellent tour of the Aerospace Bristol museum. I would like to extend my thanks and appreciation again to all who participated.”

Over the following two days, from 11-12 April 2018, the BINDT West of England Branch held its Aerospace Event (formerly the Aerospace Symposium), the only event in the UK dedicated solely to NDT in aerospace.

The event combined reports from all sectors of aerospace, with sessions covering a range of topics, including the state of the industry, NDT of new materials and research for the long-term future. There were also spotlight sessions, with updates on the IntACom project, NDT in Formula 1, dimensional metrology for AM components and Project CAN.

A free exhibition, comprising 38 exhibitors, ran alongside the event, showcasing the latest products, innovations and technology available to the industry today. This was an ideal opportunity to meet with industry colleagues, network and learn about the very latest NDT technology and services available from around the world.

Annabel Dance, Chair of the BINDT West of England Branch, said: “I found this year’s Aerospace Event really interesting and the equipment on display included some items that I was previously unaware of. The presentations were very insightful, for example ‘Industry 4.0’ highlighted the planning and direction of automated manufacture. This two-day event exceeded expectations, resulting in very positive feedback from visitors, exhibitors and presenters alike.”

All of this combined to make it an exciting aerospace experience, welcoming over 300 attendees across the three days.
