BINDT inspires next generation at 2026 NAEE events

15/06/2026

As part of its science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) outreach programme, this spring BINDT once again exhibited at a series of National Apprenticeship and Education Events (NAEE) across the UK, engaging with students, educators and industry representatives to highlight the diverse and exciting opportunities available within these fields.

Richard Jones from South West School of NDT inspiring students at the NAEE event in Cardiff

Each event brought fresh energy and curiosity from the students, many of whom were encountering non-destructive testing (NDT), condition monitoring (CM) and structural health monitoring (SHM) for the first time. These interactions reinforced just how important it is to provide accessible, hands-on experiences that connect classroom learning with real-world applications and career pathways.

The journey began in Cardiff at the Cardiff City Stadium, with support from Richard Jones of the South West School of NDT. With practical demonstrations and insights into training pathways, Richard helped students understand how technical skills translate directly into industry roles. The ability to see and discuss real equipment made a lasting impression, helping to demystify the field and spark genuine interest.

Inioluwa Afolabi of Rolls-Royce in Birmingham sharing their journey into the industry

At the Salford Community Stadium, BINDT was once again joined by BINDT STEM volunteer Roy Thiis. Roy’s continued support is invaluable and his engaging approach allowed students to explore ultrasonic testing techniques first-hand. Watching students interact with the equipment and begin to grasp how flaws can be detected in materials highlighted the power of experiential learning in shaping career aspirations.

At Millennium Point in Birmingham, BINDT was pleased to be joined by Inioluwa Afolabi, an NDT degree apprentice at Rolls-Royce. Inioluwa brought a relatable and inspiring perspective, sharing their own journey into the industry. For many students, hearing directly from someone at the start of their career made the prospect of entering the field feel more achievable. Representation and storytelling play a key role in outreach and Inioluwa’s contribution was particularly impactful.

NDT apprentices Kate Dilloway of Babcock International and Michail Savas of GKN Aerospace provide students in Bristol with valuable industry insights

The final spring event took place at Ashton Gate Stadium in Bristol, where BINDT was supported by Kate Dilloway, an NDT apprentice at Babcock International, and Michail Savas, a degree apprentice at GKN Aerospace. Their combined expertise provided students with valuable insight into how NDT is applied across major industries, from defence to aerospace. Their willingness to engage, answer questions and share real-world examples helped students connect the dots between technical concepts and meaningful careers.

These events would not be possible without the commitment of BINDT’s volunteers and industry partners. Their enthusiasm, expertise and generosity in giving their time and resources are central to the success of BINDT’s outreach efforts. By showcasing practical applications and offering direct engagement, they help bring these industries to life for young people who may never have otherwise considered them.

STEM outreach is about more than raising awareness; it is about opening doors. By introducing students to NDT, CM and SHM, BINDT and its outreach volunteers are helping to build a future workforce equipped with the skills and curiosity needed to support critical industries.

BINDT is always looking to grow its network of volunteers and industry supporters. Whether through demonstrations, mentoring or simply sharing experiences, every contribution helps to inspire the next generation. If you would like more information about how you can get involved, contact BINDT’s Outreach Coordinator Rebecca Mulholland at rebecca.mulholland@bindt.org

BINDT, which will be attending the final event in this NAEE series later this winter in Newcastle, is excited to continue this journey and looks forward to meeting more students, sparking new conversations and continuing to champion careers in NDT, CM and SHM.
