Penetrant testing remains one of the simplest and most flexible methods of non-destructive testing available for seeking defects which are open to the surface of non-porous solid materials and components. The method is widely used in the testing programme of many of the most critical parts of jet engines, nuclear devices and other similar vital components. Despite the facts that penetrant testing can be messy in operation and it is extremely difficult to give figures for the ultimate size of defects which can be found, the method is still widely used in many industries, and a critical analysis of recent years shows a steady development aimed at improving the materials used, together with a deepening understanding of the potential of various methods for applying these materials. The booklet outlines the method, discusses the materials, presents factors to be considered when choosing a penetrant system, and covers the potential sensitivity and limitations of the method.
