Skills Training UK launches apprenticeship standards for NDT

National apprenticeships provider Skills Training UK has launched its new apprenticeship standards for non-destructive testing (NDT).
The Ofqual Level 2 Non-Destructive Testing Operator and Ofqual Level 3 Non-Destructive Testing Engineering Technician have been developed in partnership with West Midlands manufacturer and designer of ultrasonic probes and NDT accessories, GB Inspection Systems Ltd.Based in Burntwood near Birmingham, GB Inspection was a significant participant in the Apprenticeship Trailblazer group that helped set the new apprenticeship standards and has already enrolled two employees on Skills Training UK’s programme.
William Hawksford has started the Ofqual Level 3 NDT Engineering Technician and Tyler Sharrock the Ofqual Level 2 NDT Operator.
William, who previously completed Skills Training UK’s Performing Manufacturing Operations Apprenticeship with GB Inspection, said: “An apprenticeship was always a route I wanted to go down. I’m looking forward to pushing on and reaching the next level.”
Skills Training UK and GB Inspection are also exploring the possibility of opening a dedicated NDT training facility in the Midlands.

“Creating a dedicated apprenticeship training facility for NDT in the Midlands would be a hugely positive step and we’re excited about the opportunities that it could bring.”

As well as NDT, it has particular expertise in the automotive, aerospace, advanced engineering, energy, utilities and rail sectors.
Stephen Crawley, Skills Director at Skills Training UK, recently addressed BINDT’s Education and Professional Development Committee to introduce the work of the company and brief members on how it is helping major employers through the recent apprenticeship reforms and how the new funding models can bring real value to businesses.
He said: “We have been working with GB Inspection for the last two years, delivering a range of apprenticeships to help develop the company’s workforce, including performing manufacturing operations and digital marketing.
“We’re delighted that they’ve been able to play such an important role in helping to set the new NDT standards and we look forward to our partnership continuing.

Skills Training UK will be on stand P29 at the Materials Testing 2017 exhibition, which runs from 5-7 September. On Thursday 7 September, Stephen Crawley will present ‘Apprenticeships for NDT – developing your workforce’ at 10 am in the exhibition hall. He will explain how employers can gain best value from apprenticeships, including maximising levy and non-levy funds.
