Phoenix Inspection Systems has strengthened its applied engineering department with two new appointments.
Dr Neil Hankinson, who joins as Project Manager, previously worked for one of the major NDT equipment suppliers. He has in-depth experience in managing product development and major R&D projects, in particular those relating to the aerospace industry. He is a specialist in phased array techniques and in carbon fibre composite inspection.
In his new role, based at Phoenix’s headquarters in Warrington, he will oversee the production of custom-made scanners, co-ordinating all aspects of the work from the development of ultrasonic techniques to mechanical design.
Dr Hankinson gained a degree in mechanical engineering and a PhD in ultrasonics and tribology from the University of Sheffield. He was a researcher at the university before joining NDT Solutions in Chesterfield five years ago. As part of the role he provided consultancy for a leading aerospace manufacturer, evaluating new ultrasonic inspection techniques for bond inspection. He also managed major EU and government-funded research projects and the development of customised ultrasonic equipment, and provided technical support for distributors on equipment and software. In his most recent role he was sales manager for advanced product and projects.
Meanwhile, James Ireland joins Phoenix as a Design Engineer. James started his career with a fabrication company, then became an engineer working in a research and development department at Du Pont before returning to full-time education. He recently gained a first class honours degree in aeronautical engineering from the University of Salford. At Phoenix, he will focus on mechanical design.
Karl Quirk, Managing Director of Phoenix, told ndtnews.org: "We are pleased to welcome Neil and James to the team. Phoenix is known worldwide for its custom-made scanners, particularly in the power generation sector. These latest appointments will bring added strength to the team and help it to maintain its position at the forefront of technology. Neil’s expertise in the aerospace industry will also help us to further develop our business in this fast-growing sector."
