BINDT to hold pre-conference workshop on Engineering Registration

05/07/2013

The British Institute of NDT is organising a one-day workshop covering all aspects of Engineering Registration, from application to interview, to be held on Monday 9 September 2013, the day before the start of the NDT 2013 Conference and the Materials Testing Exhibition. The workshop will take place in the same venue as the conference and exhibition, the International Centre, Telford, Shropshire, UK.

As a licensed member of the Engineering Council (EC), the Institute encourages suitably qualified members to register with the EC. The Institute can assess those members for admission to the EC register, in the three categories of Chartered Engineer (CEng), Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and Engineering Technician (EngTech).

Under its Royal Charter, the EC regulates the engineering profession in the UK and formally represents the interests of UK engineers abroad. It is a Designated Authority under the current General Systems Directives.

All candidates for registration as Chartered Engineer, Incorporated Engineer and Engineering Technician must satisfy the competence standards set by the EC and be members of the appropriate Licensed Member Engineering Institution. Applicants must show that they have a satisfactory educational base, have undergone approved professional development and, at interview, must demonstrate their professional competence against specific criteria. These are described in the Engineering Council’s UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC).

The Telford workshop will begin with a session in the morning for existing registrants who are interested in becoming, or who already are, Professional Registration Interview (PRI) Assessors. BINDT is currently seeking new assessors due to an increase in the number of candidates for registration. If, after an initial application review by the Institute’s Engineering Council Working Group (ECWG), a candidate is put forward for a PRI, at least two registered assessors are required to conduct the interview. Each assessor needs to be trained in Engineering Council regulations, the UK-SPEC standard and interview processes and techniques, and should also have some experience of observing interviews. This workshop session will cover these issues and provide an essential introduction as well as a useful refresher for new and existing assessors. Members wishing to attend should contact Julie Grieve at the Secretariat.

After lunch there will be an opportunity for registration candidates who have been approved for PRI to undergo an interview. This may also facilitate, where appropriate and acceptable,  prospective as well as experienced assessors to observe the process.

The workshop will be followed by an informal networking and advisory opportunity primarily aimed at those interested in applying for registration. Information on the benefits of registration and the processes involved will be available and those with the knowledge and experience of the procedure will be on hand to answer questions.

Thus, if you want to be identified as having competences that employers value, need or desire international recognition of your qualifications and wish to confirm that your commitment to professionalism is underwritten by the support of BINDT, contact Julie Grieve for further information or just come along between 4 pm and 7 pm on Monday 9 September to the International Centre, Telford.
