Survey to understand evolving landscape of NDT in the UK
02/06/2026
A new survey has been launched by the British Institute of NDT (BINDT) in collaboration with the UK Research Centre in NDE (RCNDE) and Innovate UK to understand the UK NDT industry’s perspectives on the opportunities, challenges and capabilities shaping the next decade.
The survey aims to understand how the NDT community should evolve to maximise opportunities emerging over the coming decade. The experience and insights of those involved in the industry are essential to informing this understanding and industry input and opinion are being invited. Non-destructive testing (NDT) underpins the safety, reliability and longevity of critical infrastructure and assets across many sectors supporting the UK economy. The NDT industry supports highly skilled, high-valued careers and enables innovation across multiple sectors.
However, there are many influences creating change in the industry, including emerging technologies, automation, new materials, novel applications and workforce dynamics. These developments present risks as well as opportunities to deliver greater value for the UK economy.
Building on the 2014 report, A Landscape for the Future of NDT in the UK Economy, this study aims to understand how the UK NDT industry should evolve over the coming decade and what capabilities and actions are required to enable the transition.
This survey is seeking perspectives from industry, researchers and stakeholders on how NDT may develop in the next five to ten years. We are interested in the current practice, the factors that influence how NDT is performed today and the opportunities, challenges and capabilities shaping the next decade.
The perspectives given will help shape a shared view of the future of NDT and its continued contribution to UK industrial competitiveness, innovation and high-quality jobs.
