Fill level management in the Internet of Things

22/05/2019

Pepperl+Fuchs has presented a level sensor that transmits its data to a secure remote station in the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). The IoT sensor WILSEN.sonic.level is bundled into a starter package with the WILSEN.service and a business data platform, making it easier to gain an introduction to the technology. This allows users to quickly determine the value of the IoT system for their own company.

The IIoT connects the virtual world of information technology with the real world of machine and plant engineering and opens up new possibilities for process automation. With the help of radio sensors that transmit their data to the internet, it is also possible to control assets that are either widely distributed or seem impossible to connect due to their mobility.

With the WILSEN.sonic.level, Pepperl+Fuchs presents an ultrasonic wireless sensor for monitoring fill levels in mobile containers, tanks and silos. In addition, the battery-operated device determines the geolocation of the container and transmits the collected data via a GSM or LoRaWAN connection to a defined collection point on the internet. The WILSEN.service not only ensures the secure exchange of data but also allows centralised management of all IoT sensors in the field. In turn, software systems and data platforms for business data processing can be connected to the service.

Pepperl+Fuchs has compiled an entry-level starter kit that includes all of the components required to form a working IoT system. This time-limited, fixed-cost package allows interested parties to get started with the IoT even without prior knowledge, so that they can gather experience in their own process environment as quickly as possible.

Pepperl+Fuchs is one of the world’s leading providers of industrial sensors and explosion protection. Based on an intense dialogue with its customers for more than 70 years, the company continues to develop new components and solutions that support its customers’ applications in the best ways possible. For the landmark topic Industry 4.0 (IIoT) Pepperl+Fuchs has developed innovative technologies that pave the way to the digital networked production and to data transfer across all hierarchy levels, even beyond the boundaries of companies.

Market-specific solutions dominate an extensive portfolio of industrial sensors that covers all applications the market requires from the automation technology of today. From the inductive and capacitive to the photoelectrical and highly precise ultrasonic sensors, identification systems and many more, Pepperl+Fuchs offers all current operating principles in a broad variety.

Sensorik4.0® provides sensor technology for Industry 4.0. Pepperl+Fuchs technologies enable sensors to communicate horizontally within the production process without difficulty and to exchange data vertically, even into higher-level information systems such as manufacturing execution systems (MESs) or enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems.

Components and technologies for use in hazardous areas are designed to fit the most specific requirements in the industries Pepperl+Fuchs serves. They guarantee maximum availability at maximum safety. Isolated barriers, signal isolators, remote I/O or fieldbus systems, human machine interfaces (HMIs) and many other technologies offer solutions for a wide range of applications, including certified packaged solutions and all types of explosion protection.

Ex-Protection4.0 brings digital networked Industry 4.0 production structures to process industries. With concept studies such as Ethernet for process automation, integrated communication throughout all levels of an automation system via Ethernet becomes feasible, for the first time ever even down to the fill level.
