20/09/2013 New PCN Level 3 pathway to Incorporated Engineer registration
Following the alignment of PCN Level 2 certification with the requirements for Engineering Technician (EngTech) registration, the Engineering Council has now also agreed that PCN Level 3 certification satisfies the knowledge and understanding requirements for registration as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng).

13/09/2013 Lawrence Goldberg inducted into Divers’ Hall of Fame
Lawrence Goldberg, Sea Test Services, was recently inducted into the ADCI Divers’ Hall of Fame. He was acknowledged for his significant contributions to NDT and the commercial diving industry. Goldberg is regarded as one of the ‘fathers’ of underwater NDT because of the new tools and methods that he invented for ensuring the structural integrity of offshore structures.

TÜV Rheinland Intercert Kft, a subsidiary of TÜV Rheinland AG in Hungary, has acquired 100% of Minell Quality Control and Services Ltd. The company provides services in the area of non-destructive testing for industrial clients, particularly in the energy business. With the acquisition, TÜV Rheinland strategically and geographically expands the portfolio in industrial services.

10/09/2013 NDT Limited’s Training Section now open for business
NDT Limited (Sheffield) has announced the recent appointment of Mr Craig Hobson as Training Manager. Craig will be responsible for the development of NDT Limited’s existing BINDT PCN-approved magnetic particle, penetrant and radiography training courses and facilities, as well as introducing the new PCN-approved training course for ultrasonic inspection.

Widely-publicised catastrophic failures of forged materials in deepwater applications have called into question the structural integrity of such products and focused industry attention on the need for carefully-managed ‘integrity management’ of key components. Errors in material selection at the design stage, the use of incorrect heat treatment techniques and inconsistent mechanical testing regimes, often involving test-pieces not taken from the actual components, can lead to product failures during operation, typically resulting in significant environmental, safety and financial costs.
