SKF sends winners of football tournament to Gothia Cup in Sweden

SKF (UK) Limited is sending Hazlehead Academy to the Gothia Cup in Sweden after the Aberdeen-based school recently won SKF’s local Meet the World football tournament. Hazlehead Academy will follow in the footsteps of Aberdeen Football Club’s famous 1983 heroes as they compete for European glory in Gothenburg.
All Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire secondary schools were invited to enter an under 14s team to compete in the Meet the World football tournament for the chance to take part in the Gothia Cup in Sweden. Founded in 1975, the Gothia Cup is the world’s biggest football tournament for children and young people, where 1,600 teams from 80 nations compete irrespective of religion, skin colour or nationality.
As tournament winners, Hazlehead Academy’s prize includes flights to Sweden for the whole team and adult supervisors, with SKF also funding accommodation and meals as well as new football kits for the team.
“This year’s Meet the World tournament has been a great success, with teams from schools in the local area giving an excellent performance,” commented Diane Anderson, QHSE Manager at SKF. “After impressive performances in the qualifying rounds, the winning school, Hazlehead Academy, produced a stunning display in the final to win 4-0 against a hardworking Fraserburgh.”
Neil Simpson, former AFC player and Gothenburg great, presented prizes to all players who participated in the tournament.
As part of its ongoing commitment to corporate social responsibility, SKF Aberdeen is this year supporting local charity Charlie House, which engages in activities and projects to support children with complex disabilities and life-limiting conditions. At the Meet the World football tournament, Charlie House hosted a stand raising £720.77 for its future projects through a tuck shop, raffle and merchandise. This total will be doubled by SKF.
The Gothia Cup will take place on 12-18 July 2015 in Gothenburg, Sweden.
