Job details:
A Quality Technician is currently sought by an aerospace company in Rugby. A metallurgical or materials science qualification is compulsory for this role.

Purpose of the role:

The Quality Technician will be working within the materials testing laboratory and will be responsible for the inspection, non-destructive testing and destructive testing of products.
The role will be to ensure that the manufactured products are compliant with the relevant technical specifications and customer drawings through inspection.

Primary tasks:

  • Provide technical assistance on metallurgical defects and mechanical test failures
  • Take a lead in ensuring that processes are completed as required
  • Use 8D methodology to problem solve quality issues, including dimensional, mechanical and metallurgical defects
  • Provide detailed quality reports and analysis for the Quality Assurance Manager
  • Undertake any other duties/responsibilities as reasonably requested by management.

Secondary tasks:

In addition to the above, the employee may be asked to perform any of the following depending on skills and training:

  • Carry out non-destructive testing to include magnetic particle inspection and dye penetrant inspection. Level 2 NDT certification is required with evidence of training and examinations.
  • Carry out metallographic inspection on in-process and finished parts
  • Carry out grade 3 calibration duties
  • Carry out pre-plate and after plate inspection in accordance with the relevant work instructions
  • Carry out hydrogen and oxygen analysis in accordance with the relevant work instructions
  • Carry out ‘final view’ inspection, ensuring that all information is present and correct for each manufacturing order
  • Check that information on test reports and certificates of conformance are in accordance with the customer’s requirements before signing for their release for shipment
  • Carry out mechanical tests including: tensile, shear, fatigue, hardness checks, stress durability and stress endurance tests, all in accordance with the relevant work instructions
  • Review incoming raw material certificates
  • The Quality Control Technician may also be required to perform internal audits to AS9100 requirements
  • To be cross-trained into the plating or other department where there are no conflicts of interest
  • Undertake any other duties/responsibilities as reasonably requested by management.


Essential requirements:

  • Qualification in metallurgy or materials science
  • The ability to use measuring equipment, such as micrometers, verniers and optical projectors
  • An understanding of material testing processes and how they work
  • Good understanding of technical drawings.
