Bio-inspired resilience: Outsmarting fatigue through precursors detection and control

Dr Ed Habtour, US Army Research Laboratory, USA, Professor Richard Loendersloot, University of Twente, NL, Professor Dario Di Maio, University of Twente, NL

Advancements in SHM continue to deliver novel techniques for detecting damage precursors (DPs) in engineering systems. Detection examples include the sensing of various properties due to material degradation and amplifying dynamic non-linearities. The session focuses on new innovations in DPs that may enable bio-inspired resilient systems through: (i) connecting SHM to the control laws of a vehicle; and (ii) adapting based on an updated health state. The session offers multidisciplinary mathematical and experimental methods to build connections between DPs at the level of materials and the global structural response. Finding the important connections can be key in controlling the ageing process of high-value engineering systems.
