Draft changes to the three existing NDT apprenticeship standards

Members of BINDT’s Education & Professional Development Committee and the Condition Monitoring Technical Committee (CMTC) recently joined forces to draft changes to the three existing NDT apprenticeship standards. Some minor tweaks were made, one being the subtle acronym change in the job title from ‘non-destructive testing’ to ‘non-destructive technology’. The most important aspect of the changes is that employers can choose from the wide variety of both NDT (testing) and condition monitoring (CM) qualifications and mix and match to suit themselves. We will seek guidance from the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE) and hope that CM qualifications can be included as soon as possible, hopefully even ahead of official publication, and advise the Lead Providers that this is possible. My other favourite NDT acronym is ‘nothing done today’. I’m not even going to get into the differences between NDT, NDE and NDI.

In other changes, the University of Northampton is now a new Lead Provider for the NDT Engineer standard. Employers can go directly to the university, which will draw down government funding on their behalf. The other major Lead Provider is Skills Training UK, which offers all three standards: NDT Engineer, NDT Engineering Technician and NDT Operator.
