Our educational development programme

This month, I will summarise the current status of our educational development programme…

All apprenticeships and other educational programmes have been developed to include the requirements of BS EN ISO 9712 and BS EN 4719. Other standards could also be included, subject to a successful matching process.

The NDT Engineering Technician apprenticeship is ready for delivery – the main requirement is to achieve three NDT Level 2 methods, one of which must be a complex method. It is a three-year apprenticeship and attracts potential funding of £28.8k from government.

The NDT Operator apprenticeship is also ready for delivery – the main requirement is to achieve one NDT Level 2 method. It is an eighteen-month apprenticeship and attracts potential funding of £12.8k from government.

The NDT Incorporated Engineer apprenticeship is under development – the main requirement will be to achieve a Bachelor’s degree, but with a pathway to achieving an NDT Level 3, a Foundation degree and a Bachelor’s degree. It will be a four-year apprenticeship; the funding is yet to be agreed with government.

The Nuclear Welding Inspection Technician (NWIT) apprenticeship is ready for delivery – the main requirement is to achieve one NDT Level 2 method, Welding Inspector and an HNC. It is a four-year apprenticeship and attracts potential funding of £12.8k from government. This apprenticeship has been put together by another development group, with Sellafield Ltd as its main employer.
The MSc Advanced Industrial Practice (STEM) is an exciting new proposal from the University of Northampton that is subject to negotiation. It will be initially developed as a self-funded programme (not an apprenticeship) but has the potential to become an apprenticeship at a later stage.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has given BINDT permission to publish the ‘Best Practice Guidelines’ (a total of four) on the BINDT website. They have also given permission for us to create others in a similar style, so this is something that the Education and Professional Development Committee will be looking into.

We are in the process of creating and publishing (on the BINDT website) numerous documents to assist employers and apprentices in the development of their apprenticeships. The mandatory government documents only prescribe (in the simplest terms) the requirements for knowledge, skills and behaviours, together with how an apprentice will be judged at the end of the apprenticeship. The Trailblazer Development Group is in the process of creating many more documents that provide essential information for the creation of the apprenticeship programme. These documents, which can be recognised by their style and branding, are being published by the BINDT Publishing, Media & Marketing Department. The website is being periodically updated with documents, so you should make regular visits to http://www.bindt.org/education-and-training/Apprenticeships/apprenticeship-document-download/. We would like to thank RWE Generation UK and Lavender International for contributing a number of photographs, which have enhanced the appearance of the documentation.
