Shaw Inspection Systems launches X-ray image library online

07/11/2007

Shaw Inspection Systems, a leader in the development of digital non-destructive testing systems, has launched an online image library featuring a wide range of digital radiographs (DR), commonly known as X-ray images.

Among the first images added to the library and available for download are those taken of the unique Antikythera Mechanism, an astonishingly intricate ancient mechanical calculator dating from the second century BC that was constructed to calculate complex astronomical cycles. A Shaw Inspection Systems Venlo digital X-ray inspection system was used to acquire these (DR) images of the mechanism. For the first time digital radiographs for all 82 of the surviving fragments of the Mechanism are published. Furthermore, the library also includes a number of extremely high resolution (over 30 mega pixels) computed radiography (CR) images of three of the key fragments.

Shaw Inspection Systems' image library also contains examples of paper currency, sheet packaging materials, plant and tree leaves, fruit, igneous rock, wood, sea shells and waste drums, as well as the Anitkythera Mechanism. Shaw Inspection Systems plans to add further images to the library including further examples of products and components from industries as diverse as aerospace, military, nuclear and pipeline as well as materials, power, security, pharmaceuticals and medical.
