30/03/2015 FSN Racing team hungry for victory in 2015
With less than five months to go until the 18th Formula Student UK competition takes place at Silverstone, the Formula Student Northampton (FSN) Racing team – sponsored by BINDT – has revealed the new plans and designs for its 2015 single-seat racing car, and has officially opened its new garage facility based at the University of Northampton’s Avenue Campus.

As a Licensed Member of the Engineering Council (EC), the Institute encourages suitably qualified members to register with the EC. 23/03/2015 DNV GL establishes recommended practice to manage integrity of subsea production systems
Hot on the heels of a new recommended practice (RP) for subsea lifting, DNV GL has now published an RP providing guidance on how to establish, implement and maintain an integrity management system (IMS). The aim is to help operators carry out maintenance activities at the most cost-effective intervals, increase confidence in the condition of the subsea equipment and ensure a unified and reliable reference for both authorities and the industry.
20/03/2015 ASDEC facility provides competitive advantage for UK engineering
The University of Leicester launched the £2.5 million Advanced Structural Dynamics Evaluation Centre (ASDEC) in July 2014 – the UK’s first commercial robotised 3D scanning laser vibration measurement and modal analysis centre providing advanced vibration consultancy. The laser Doppler vibrometer (Robovib) technology that is employed at ASDEC gives distinct benefits of speed, accuracy and volume of measurements over traditional methods.

The International (EU/US) Harmonisation Team, operating under the Memorandum of Understanding between ASD-STAN and AIA, has concluded its work of the last two years, resulting in the simultaneous publication of prEN 4179:2014 and NAS 410 rev 4 on 19 December 2014. Members of the British Institute of NDT are increasingly using the ‘My BINDT’ area of the BINDT website to update their contact details and password, view their membership status, pay and renew membership fees and download documents corresponding to their role on committees. The online version of Insight can be accessed for free and members can also find a growing number of resources and relevant information, as well as register for future e-newsletters.

Since the new owners took over in October 2012, GB Inspection Systems (GBIS) has been adding staff and purchasing new equipment to meet increased demand in sales and service. As part of its commitment to investing in excellence and improving customer service, GBIS has purchased a much larger property in Burntwood, Staffordshire, to facilitate continued growth and enhance its manufacturing, R&D and service departments’ capability and flexibility. The company is planning a move date of April 2015.

A roadmap of the future vision for NDT has been outlined in the 2014 report: ‘A landscape for the future of NDT in the UK economy’. The report identifies current opportunities and challenges for the NDT community in the UK and lists four primary areas where key enabling actions are required for the growth of the NDT industry in the UK. One of these primary areas is ‘people’.

Industry is well aware of the NDT technologies available to monitor everything from a single bearing to a multi-story building, in order to detect irregularities that may indicate a defect or weakness that requires further investigation. There are a multitude of manufacturers out there providing state-of-the-art hardware and software packages that should allow us to monitor almost anything and prevent unexpected failures. But who uses these instruments and how do we know that they are proficient at interpreting the data?

Martin Dawson IEng HonFInstNDT has spent most of his working life involved in non-destructive testing and condition monitoring, particularly in the areas of education, training and certification. As a volunteer, he has provided wide-ranging support to BINDT for 32 years, much of that as a senior officer. He joined BINDT in 1982.

DolphiTech has announced that the DolphiCam ultrasound inspection camera and DolphiTech TeamCenter software has been selected as the recommended NDT tool for structural inspections on Lamborghini Huracán LP 610-4 carbon fibre primary automotive structures. The DolphiTech inspection solution will be used in collision centres worldwide to verify the integrity of the carbon fibre structure of the Lamborghini Huracán after any serious incidents.
02/03/2015 Wind energy NDT training reaches milestone
TEST NDT has recently completed its 100th week of formal training for the inspection of wind energy structures. These specialised training courses were initially developed almost 10 years ago following a request from a major wind turbine blade manufacturer for the development of a specialised training curriculum for the inspectors of composite blades of wind turbines.
