SAFed

Safety Assessment Federation

SAFedSafety Assessment Federation –  is an industry organisation which represents the UK independent engineering inspection and certification industry. Many of the members are insurance companies. SAFed acts as a focal point for all issues and concerns relating to the statutory inspection and certification, safe use and operation of plant, machinery and equipment.

SAFed has a number of Technical Committees (TC) which each address different areas of inspection such as pressure equipment and lifts, lifting plant and mechanical plant. TC5 looks at non-destructive testing. Following the first PANI project, TC5 got together with The British Institute of NDT to set up the BINDT/SAFed ISI qualification scheme for operators inspecting shell boilers.

SAFed produces a number of publications and guidance documents. Key documents for NDT are:
  • Shell Boilers: Guidelines for the Examination of Shell-to-Endplate and Furnace-to-Endplate Welded Joints, Ref: SBG1
  • Shell Boilers: Guidelines for the Examination of Longitudinal Seams of Shell Boilers, Ref: SBG2
