Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production

STEPSpherical Tokamak for Energy Production is a prototype fusion power plant that will be built at West Burton under a government-funded industry partnership programme. The construction of the plant is planned to start in the early 2030s with a view to being completed in 2040.

A tokamak consists of a ring-shaped container, referred to as a ‘torus’. Inside is a hot plasma of fusion fuels, which is controlled by the use of powerful external magnetic fields.
